A destination of significant cultural interest, and a key point for the Greek Revolution of 1821, Hydra will sweep you through intriguing paths to Greece’s history and tradition. Discover its illustrious past and exciting present by visiting the following places.
The Pavlos Kountouriotis Mansion
The historic and beautifully maintained building was built by Georgios Kountouriotis before 1821. His grandson, Pavlos Kountouriotis, who later became an admiral, Minister of Maritime Affairs, Regent, and President of the Republic, carried out extensive renovations. In 1991, the Ministry of Culture purchased the building and turned it into a museum. A single visit suffices for gaining an understanding of what the grand mansions of Hydra were like, as you admire the architecture, furnishings and decorative items that have remained in the residence. The main building includes, among other things, two reception areas, a dining room, the admiral’s office and a bedroom.
Historical House of Lazaros Kountouriotis
A splendid two-story mansion that serves as a branch of the National Historical Museum. On display are the family’s heirlooms and exhibits from the folkloric collections of the National Historical Museum. It also hosts interesting temporary exhibitions (Tel. 22980 52421).
Historical Archive Museum
The museum includes a historical gallery, war memorabilia, and an exhibition area featuring traditional Hydrian costumes and artworks, among other things. Exhibitions and events are organized annually (www.facebook.com).
Church and Byzantine Museum of Agios Makarios Notaras
Housing the treasures of the Monastery at the heart of Hydra’s main town, the museum showcases sacred icons, vestments, holy utensils, musical manuscripts, and the image of the Virgin Mary known as “Rhodo Amaranth”. The Monastery was built in the mid-17th century (Tel. 22980 54071).
DESTE Foundation of Hydra
DESTE’s (https://deste.gr/ ) exhibition space, located in the island’s old slaughterhouse, was inaugurated in June 2009. Every year, it hosts a different modern art exhibition. The art is created by artists who draw inspiration from this specific venue. Currently hosting Jeff Koons’ “Apollo”, as of June 2023 it will open the exhibition “ Dream Machines”, curated by Daniel Birnbaum and Massimiliano Gioni, and exploring the impact of technology on human imagination.
Events/Festivals
If you’re in Hydra at Easter, it’s worth visiting Kaminia, where the Epitaphios (funeral bier) is immersed into the sea to bless the waters, in a traditional ritual that has been upheld since 1923. Hydra’s grand festival is the renowned Miaoulia, a series of events held at the end of June that last for one week. Dedicated to the famous Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, the events conclude in an explosive way with the enactment of the Battle of Gerontas and the burning of the Ottoman frigate.
