On Sunday, April 2nd, Athens’ historic city center cinemas, IDEAL, ASTOR, and IRIDA, will open their doors for free screenings and live events, welcoming the public with open arms. All movie lovers and city residents are invited to show their support for the continued operation of these famous theaters and for the nation’s film culture on the whole.
Recent developments have put the survival of the two theaters on Panepistimiou Street (Ideal) and Stoa Korai (Astor) at risk, while there is a looming threat of IRIDA’s discontinuation. This venue currently hosts the screenings organized by the University of Athens’ Cultural Club’s Film Division.
As the city’s cinematic heritage hangs in the balance, film enthusiasts and local inhabitants are encouraged to demonstrate their backing for the ongoing presence of these cherished venues.
Screenings and events will start in the afternoon and continue into the evening both inside and outside the theaters. Screens will be set up at Korai Square and at 55 Akadimias Street.
A series of partner festivals and organizations will participate with their selected screenings (see below).
