Dedicated to Thessaloniki’s Byzantine legacy, this museum explores 1,000 years of art and history through 11 exhibition halls. Over 3,000 artifacts include mosaics, icons, and coins, as well as early-Christian tombs with frescoes. Liturgical vessels and everyday engravings offer insight into daily life in Byzantium. With its extensive collection, the museum sheds light on Thessaloniki’s significance during the empire’s peak as the second-largest city after Constantinople.

White Tower of Thessaloniki

Once a 15th-century Ottoman fortification and prison, the White Tower now symbolizes Thessaloniki’s resilience. The six-storey museum charts the city’s evolution, from its founding in 316 BC to its diverse cultural identity shaped by centuries of trade, faiths, and ethnicities. The rooftop balcony rewards visitors with panoramic views of the Thermaic Gulf, offering a unique perspective on Thessaloniki’s past and present. (It’s part of the MOMus network)

Housed in a neoclassical landmark designed by Ernst Ziller, this museum examines Macedonia’s history during the Ottoman era, focusing on the Macedonian Struggle (1904-1908). Historical artifacts, maps, and photographs reveal diplomatic efforts and guerrilla warfare that defined the region’s identity. The building, formerly the Greek Consulate, played a key role as an operations center during the struggle. Today, it hosts the Research Centre for Macedonian History.

Thessaloniki Municipal Gallery – Casa Bianca

Housed in Casa Bianca, a listed mansion blending neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles, this gallery exudes both artistic and architectural relevance. Built between 1911 and 1913, the mansion was home to the Fernandez-Diaz family, victims of Nazi deportation during WWII. Since 2013, it has showcased Greek art from 1898 to today, with notable works by Nikolaos Gyzis, Georgios Iakovidis, and folk artist Theophilos. Its collection also includes Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons. A seasonal café-restaurant operates in the courtyard.

Located on Pier A in the port, the Cinema Museum explores the evolution of Greek cinema from the early 20th century to today. Exhibits include vintage posters, film equipment, and a tribute to Takis Kanellopoulos, a prominent local director. The museum highlights eras like post-WWII realism, the musicals of the 1960s, and the New Greek Cinema movement. It also serves as a cornerstone of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

This museum explores ancient Greek music and mythology, featuring reconstructed instruments like the lyre, kithara, and panpipes. Visitors can join guided tours with live performances by professional lyricists and even try playing an ancient Greek lyre. Inspired by the Seikilos Epitaph, the oldest surviving complete musical composition, the museum highlights the importance of music in ancient culture and its enduring legacy.
