With its impressive gardens that extend over an area of 11 hectares, Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki has received Travelife Gold certification, one of the most demanding and sought-after sustainability and social responsibility certificates in the international hotel market. The internationally recognised sustainability certification scheme, which is aimed at hotels and other tourism businesses based on their environmental, social and economic footprint, is awarded if they are shown to meet a series of strict criteria (over 160) at all levels of operation.
And this sustainability certification came after a comprehensive on-site audit of its infrastructure and facilities, during which it was found to have achieved high standards of environmental management, social responsibility and corporate governance.
For example, all light bulbs in the rooms have been replaced with LED ones, saving energy, while 60% of the light bulbs in the common areas have also been replaced. In addition, natural gas is used for heating, hot water and steam. In the meeting rooms, plastic water bottles have been replaced with glass ones, while half-full water bottles are emptied into a large container and used to water the plants.
Moreover, plastic mini toiletry bottles have been replaced by larger glass ones, while plastic entrance cards have been replaced by biodegradable ones. The same has happened with straws and drink stirrers. Ultimately, plastic cups have been replaced by paper cups and of course materials such as paper, glass, metal, light bulbs, electrical appliances, etc. are recycled.
Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki’s environmental consciousness also includes reducing food waste by making donations to vulnerable groups, supporting local producers and using seasonal local products in restaurant menus, donating old furniture to non-governmental organizations and bed linens to hospitals, etc.

Academy

This is one of the restaurants in front of which the filming of The Bricklayer took place for two days. Decorated with vintage furniture and artworks of great Greek and foreign artists, the Academy exudes a highly artistic atmosphere. At the same time it is a very warm and welcoming place, whose owners have managed to combine sophisticated flavours with art.
The restaurant also also features a beautiful glass-roofed courtyard (open in summer) called Frida Khalo. Drawing inspiration from the latter’s distinctive painting style, the courtyard is decorated with bright colours and patterns.

The restaurant’s dishes focus on Greek Mediterranean cuisine, while the menu also includes tweaked traditional dishes such as fish fricassee and meatballs with traditional Macedonian vinegar and garlic sauce accompanied by trahanas mousse.
Be sure to try some of the Academy’s best dishes, such as gnocchi stuffed with mushrooms and parmesan sauce, wild mushroom orzo with truffle butter and parmesan, and cabbage rolls. For dessert, enjoy a piece of airy millefeuille or Thessaloniki’s traditional dessert, Armenoville.

Ypsilon

Housed in an impressive 1870s building, Ypsilon is an all-day meeting point – a place for coffee, food, reading, art, a place ideal for various activities such as exhibitions, workshops, corporate meetings, private parties, DJ sets, etc. It is worth noting that the building that houses Ypsilon has been classified as a work of art by the Ephorate of Modern Monuments, as it is one of the few architectural gems of the city that survived the great fire of 1917.
On the ground floor there is a reading room that can also host meetings, presentations, etc. In the back hall there is a café bar and a restaurant, while upstairs there is a co-working space.
As for the menu, it focuses on Mediterranean flavours, serving from early in the morning simple but delicious dishes such as fried eggs with fried potatoes, goat cheese and fresh oregano, baguettes with salami Milanese, fresh butter and pickles, as well as spaghetti bolognese.

Papageorgiou

The traditional pastry shop Papageorgiou, which since 1926 has been faithfully following the same old authentic recipe, the roots of which are lost in time, counts ninety-six years of history. The company was founded by the excellent confectioner Lazaros Papageorgiou and in 1937. Due to high demand for his products, he opened two stores. One of them is still in operation today.
In 1967 the second Papageorgiou generation created the new privately owned production facilities in Kalohori, Thessaloniki. Today, the third generation with their expertise combines innovation with tradition, remaining true to the vision of the founder of the company.
You may find the whole range of the company’s products in its store in the heart of Thessaloniki. There you’ll find a large variety of top-quality jams and 17 different kinds of sweet preserves, all kept in traditional blue pots. You will also find jarred jams with stevia, without added sugars, ideal for a healthy diet, since they have 60% less calories, loukoumia (Turkish delights) in various flavours, condensed top-quality sour cherry juice without preservatives, as well as traditional fondant, in vanilla or mastic flavour, which children love to enjoy by the spoonful submerged in a glass of cold water.
