The sun-drenched peninsula of Sithonia in Halkidiki, boasts a remarkable array of Blue Flag beaches, offering a paradise for those seeking pristine, crystalline waters and abundant natural beauty. Along the golden sands and turquoise shores, visitors can enjoy the serenity of pine forests and the diversity of these tranquil havens. From the expansive Armenistis to the sequestered Kryfos Paradeisos, each beach presents a unique experience, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the Mediterranean’s warm embrace and the captivating beauty of this enchanting region.
Here we describe our top beach picks in Sithonia:
Armenistis
Also known as the ‘best beach in Halkidiki’, it has thick, non-sticky sand, crystal-clear deep waters, and is surrounded by pine trees, attracting plenty of visitors coming here for the eponymous campsite as well as the beach bar – both on the right side of the beach. If you prefer less people and more peace, head to the left end; the rocks there are perfect for diving.
Karydi
The turquoise waters and fine white sand are reminiscent of the Caribbean, and the lush green pine trees, and white rocks with glassy, transluscent waters at both ends of the bay make this Instagrammable spot perfect for snorkelling. Karydi in Vourvourou rightfully ranks among the best beaches in Halkidiki. Opt for an early morning visit to avoid the crowds.
Kalamitsi
Near the settlement of Kalamitsi, you can access not one but three lovely beaches: the southern one, where the campsite is located, has thicker sand; the central one, in front of the settlement, has finer sand, with a café and good dining options, and the northern and wilder beach has no amenities, often attracting naturists and campers.
Kavourotrypes
A stunning beach between Armenisti and Sarti beaches, where a stretch of fine sand meets azure waters, framed by soft grey-white rocks that form small bays. Pine trees add extra beauty, and despite the beach’s popularity, its season is longer than other nearby beaches. Its name translates as “crab holes”.
Toroni
One of the largest beaches on the second leg of the peninsula, Toroni has something for everyone: a beach bar with umbrellas and fish tavernas at one end, and free sandy stretches and tranquility at the other. Here you’ll find crystal-clear blue waters, coarse sand, and one of the best sunsets that make this place a must-visit.
Kryfos Paradeisos
While it may no longer be as concealed (in Greek, ‘Kryfos’ means hidden) since foreign travel magazines began recommending it, the beach next to Tristinika remains a landscape of unparalleled beauty. Tall rocks rise at the edges of the bay, the waters are azure, and the sand is golden. Access is via a short footpath followed by a bit of dirt road.
Tristinika
With coarse sand and deep waters, one of this beach’s main attractions is its extensive length. It remains largely untouched by tourism, leaving most of it free to enjoy. To the right of the bay, a tasteful beach bar operates with a few umbrellas by the sea.
Diaporos
Another lovely place to swim at is Diaporos Island, opposite the popular Vourvourou beach. With its clear blue waters and light-coloured sand, the island is a very scenic swimming area that was once a well-kept secret but today is lively with activities such as kayaking, fishing, and boat excursions.
Tigania
This striking and peaceful beach located between Klimataria and Kriaritsi is made up of three adjacent sandy coves surrounded by lush natural beauty and looking out on majestic views of Mount Athos. An added plus at Tigania is its beach bar, where you can chill out under palm leaf umbrellas with a refreshing drink.
