01

Culture

Start by delving into Tinos’ cultural and spiritual heritage.

The Museums

Tinos has a sophisticated cultural heritage rooted back to antiquity, as you can discover at the Archaeological Museum. It is also home to some of Greece’s most famous sculptors because of its renowned marble quarries. Don’t miss out on the Tinian Artists Museum, the Museum of Marble Crafts, and the Yiannoulis Halepas House in Pyrgos. The island also honors the work of local and international artists by showcasing it in impressive exhibitions at several wonderful spaces such as the Art Gallery of the Evangelistria Foundation.

The Archaeological Sites

Ancient Tinos was a pilgrim’s destination, as evidenced by the Temple of Poseidon and Amphitrite at Kionia. The ancient temple met its demise at the hands of Christians in the early 4th century. The archaeological site is now open to visitors. On the eastern boundary of the lively Agios Fokas beach, a rocky hill juts out into the sea known as Vrekastro (or Vryokastro). Atop this hill, you can find remnants of a fort and a Neolithic settlement dating back to the 16th century BC.

The Panagia Evangelistria Church

Known by several names – Panagia Evangelistria, Church of the Annunciation, or Church of Panagia Megalochari – this major landmark on Tinos is among Greece’s most revered pilgrimage sites. An icon of the Virgin Mary, unearthed in 1823 after Santa Pelagia’s visions and subsequently attributed with countless miracles, draws the faithful from around the world to this church built in 1880 on the exact site of the icon’s discovery. The church’s presence inspires myriad celebrations on Tinos, fostering a deep sense of devotion and faith among locals.

The Villages

Volax and Kakovolo

It is impossible to remain indifferent to the other-worldly landscape of Volax, scattered with thousands of small and large spherical granite rocks in a triangular plateau spanning 23 square kilometers. Nearby Falatados is the starting point for a journey through Kakovolo. A multitude of rounded granites creates one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Cyclades, like a breathtaking outdoor geological museum. Among these stones are old threshing floors, tiny churches, and storage “cells” for livestock.

Exobourgo

The peculiarly shaped rocky hill is discernible from many vantage points on the island. Perched 640 meters above sea level, these rugged, naturally fortified rocks once housed the highest castle in the Aegean Sea. This area served as the island’s capital during various historical periods. The climb up to the rock with the castle ruins and crows circling above is a memorable experience with unparalleled views of the neighboring islands. The site has been a hotspot for rock climbers in recent years.

Pyrgos and Panormos

A visit to Tinos would be incomplete without a sojourn to Pyrgos with its renowned square and its marble fountain, cafes, and eateries all under the towering shade of a giant plane tree. As the largest settlement after Tinos town, Pyrgos draws crowds. A leisurely stroll through its lanes rewards visitors with sights of blooming courtyards and a wealth of marble architectural elements – doorways, windows, ornamental reliefs, and fountains. Just 3.5 kilometers from Pyrgos, you’ll discover Panormos, a charming village with a small harbor and tavernas.

Kardiani and Ysternia

Built amphitheatrically into the slope of Mt Pateles, Kardiani is enveloped in verdant greenery and offers a stunning view of the sea. A walk through the village reveals attractive houses, marble fountains, vaulted arcades, and both Catholic and Orthodox churches – including the famous Panagia of Kioura, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, and the Holy Trinity.

A Guide To Tinos’ villages

The Village Festivals

There is no better way of connecting with the island’s locals, getting to know their community, and gaining a deeper understanding of their culture than by attending one of the annual festival celebrations. On June 15th, the Artichoke Festival in the village of Komi showcases the local love for this unique vegetable through delectable dishes, traditional music, and a warm welcome extended to all. July 23rd sees the celebration of Agia Pelagia as the revered icon is taken to the Monastery of Kehrovouniou by a procession of worshippers.

The Marble Quarries

Renowned for its magnificent marble quarries, Tinos offers a splendid spectacle to be witnessed across its landscapes, with Panormos in the north bearing the most notable sites. Marble and slate exports have underpinned Tinos’ economy since antiquity, influencing the art and architecture of Greece and far beyond in the form of ancient temples, sculptures, and modern design marvels.

The Lighthouses

Planitis, Papargyras, Dysvato. You will see them in extreme locations, both metaphorically and literally, tied to the solace and hope their light has bestowed upon sailors. The striking lighthouses of Tinos beckon one to gaze upon the open sea and experience the emotions felt by the lighthouse keepers of yesteryears.

Kiouria Church, Kardiani village, Tinos

First documented in 1726, the dovecotes still stand in various states of preservation. Approximately 600 of these ornately constructed structures, built from slate stone and limestone, are scattered across the island. It is thought that these structures were introduced to the island by the Venetians. The residents of Tinos continued to breed pigeons for their droppings, used as fertilizer, and for the delicacy of squab meat.

The Churches

Countless Orthodox and Catholic churches dot the landscape of Tinos, their elegant marble bell towers standing proud amid the settlements. Whether large or small, public or private – estimated to number around 600 – these structures punctuate any voyage across the stark Cycladic landscape.

03

Recreation

Swim around and explore one of the most impressive hiking trails in the world.

Beaches

There is a great variety of coastlines on the island to keep everyone satisfied, from family-friendly Agios Romanos and Agios Fokas to busy Kionia and tranquil and scenic Santa Margarita and Livada. Megali Kolympithra is a favorite among surfers. Mikri Kolympithra, with its sandy beach and inviting waters, is ideal for families. It offers umbrellas, sun loungers, and tavernas. Livada, Tinos’ most impressive and wild beach, is often surfable due to its exposure to the north winds and has granite rocks reminiscent of a lunar landscape.

A Guide To Tinos’ Beaches

Hiking

Virtually all of Tinos’ villages have remained authentic, flooded with light and color, ideal places to connect you with the island’s culture. Connecting them is an interesting network of trails made up of former mule tracks that covers the entire island and measures a total length of 150 kilometers. These trails were originally used by locals to get from one village to another before the island road network was developed. Some signposted trails cover the island’s coastline, while others are circular. Let your instinct lead you as you explore paths offering breathtaking views and a sense of connection to the island’s history.
