Few know that Kalavryta, with landscapes reminiscent of Switzerland, is especially alluring at Christmas and New Year. Follow this guide to step into a picturesque festive scene not generally known to non-locals, and enjoy numerous unique activities.

27

Kalavryta has several impressive attractions like a ski resort, the Cave of Lakes, the historic monasteries of Agia Lavra and Mega Spileo, and the Vouraikos Gorge, which you can traverse via the highly scenic old-style Odontotos railway. Countless moments of al fresco leisure await, as your gaze wanders over fir forests, dramatic peaks, and scenic plateaus. Here are the seven things to enjoy in Kalavryta for a memorable Christmas break.

01

Explore a Rich Cultural Heritage

The town is located at an altitude of 760 meters on a beautiful plateau at the foot of Mt Helmos. Built on the site of ancient Cynetha, its current name (“good springs”) dates back to Venetian times. Kalavryta is a “martyred town,” as on December 13, 1943, German forces executed 499 men over the age of 14 and set the town and surrounding villages ablaze—one of the most heinous war crimes of the occupation.

The town’s growth, instigated by the popularity of its ski center, is impressive. Many choose Kalavryta year-round, but it’s especially popular during the holidays.

Whether snow-covered or not, Kalavryta offers everything you’d expect: decorated squares, illuminated streets, ice skating rinks, and a festive atmosphere. The town is lined with pretty streets, shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, and the iconic Odontotos station.

In the main square with its plane trees, you’ll see busts of 1821 Greek War of Independence heroes. You’ll also see the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, whose clock tower remains stopped at the time of the German atrocities. Nearby is the smaller, picturesque Liberty Square, home to the “Plane Tree of the Three Elders,” where Zaimis, Petmezas, and Fotilas strategized.

A notable attraction is the Palaiologina building, a three-story stone structure with a machicolation above its entrance and ground-floor loopholes. On the road to the ski center lies the Place of Sacrifice on Kappi Hill, a verdant spot offering sweeping views of Kalavryta and Helmos. Here stands a large white cross with the inscription “No more wars, peace.” The memorial lists the names of executed families, while a crypt houses candles for each victim.

The Holocaust Memorial Municipal Museum, housed in a preserved historical school, showcases exhibits on pre-war Kalavryta, the occupation, and the “Operation Kalavryta” campaign by German forces. It features maps, telegrams, and survivor testimonies, as well as photographs and names of the victims.

02

Ski at Kalavryta Ski Center

Located on Helmos’ northwestern slope, the Kalavryta Ski Center extends from Xerokambos (1,700 meters) to Neraidorachi (2,340 meters), offering stunning views from the Corinthian Gulf to the Ionian Sea. Established in 1988, it boasts 14 slopes totaling 25 kilometers, catering to all skill levels. The largest snow park in Greece features jumps and obstacles, while the Styga lift ascends to one of the highest points in Greek ski resorts.

Nefeli, Greece’s longest ski slope, spans 3.2 kilometers from Neraidorachi, with a vertical drop of 640 meters and varying difficulty levels. The center includes a Playmobil children’s park, moguls ski courses, snow tubes, and snowmobiles. Visitors can relax at the chalet or rent equipment from on-site shops.

Off-season, the resort hosts mountain sports and activities, including paragliding from Neraidorachi. At its peak, you can see the Aristarchos Telescope, managed by the National Observatory of Athens. As the Balkans’ largest and mainland Europe’s second-largest telescope, it’s accessible via a short hike from the lift’s end.

03

Ride the Odontotos Railway Through Vouraikos Gorge

The 20-kilometer Vouraikos Gorge is among Europe’s ten most beautiful and part of the Natura 2000 network. The quaint and historic Odontotos railway is one of the world’s six most famous rail networks and a listed technical monument since 1996.

Constructed during Greece’s Trikoupis government, it has been operating in 1896. The name Odontotos refers to the toothed rack rail system that supports the train on steep sections. Initially a means of transporting goods and people, the line later became a tourist attraction. It passes through remarkable landscapes, including the narrow “Portes,” the stalactite-filled “Courtroom Cave,” the “Waterfall” viewpoint, and the dramatic Meteora-like cliffs of Zachlorou.

This picturesque setting is known for lush vegetation, taverns offering rooms, and the stone-built train station with its gabled roofs illuminated at night. Walk along the tracks through plane trees, apple orchards, walnut groves, and hidden cottages. From Zachlorou, the E4 European Trail leads to Niamata, a 15-kilometer hike offering spectacular scenery.

05

Visit Agia Lavra Monastery & Mega Spileo

Agia Lavra, just 4.5 kilometers from Kalavryta, was founded in the 10th century in a verdant area. According to tradition, the banner of the Greek Revolution was blessed here by Germanos of Old Patras in 1821. The monastery was burned multiple times, including by Ibrahim in 1826 and the Germans in 1943. Its current church houses the historic banner and Catherine the Great’s gifted gospel.

Mega Spileo, a stunning eight-story complex built into a cliffside, dates back to the 4th century and is one of Achaia’s major pilgrimage sites. Its highlights include the relief icon of the Virgin Mary made from wax and mastic, the Holy Spring, and the old guesthouse offering panoramic views of the Vouraikos region. Fit visitors can hike to the towers above the monastery.

06

Discover Planitero, Loussoi & Cave of Lakes

Planitero, with its ancient plane trees and the Aroanios River, is a natural monument and a popular recreational spot. The taverns here serve locally farmed trout. Nearby, the village of Lower Loussoi features the fortified Petmezas Tower, a 17th-century residence with defensive architecture. The area also hosts the archaeological site of Loussoi and the Artemis Hemera temple.

The Cave of Lakes is a geological wonder with 13 cascading underground lakes formed by calcium carbonate deposits. Discovered in 1964, it contains fossils dating to the Middle Pleistocene and evidence of habitation from the 6th millennium BC. Guided tours explore colorful stalactites, cascading pools, and fossils. A permanent exhibit complements the experience.
