Crete remains one of the most popular destinations this summer. For those of you visiting this year with family and children, we’ve selected and recommend a few beaches that tick all the boxes: shallow, azure, sufficiently warm waters, sun loungers, umbrellas, cool drinks, and good food.
Agioi Apostoloi-Golden Coast
Just 3-4 kilometers from Chania (some go on foot), the beach of Agioi Apostoloi-Golden Coast is popular and suitable for families with children. It has sand and blue waters, and it’s located at a point that “cuts” the wave as a bay is formed. Also, it’s fully organized as it’s a tourist area, so you can find umbrellas and sun loungers, as well as eat or cool off with a drink. At the Golden Coast, there’s also a playground for the kids, and nearby there are green areas and trees where you can stroll, and the kids (if their age allows) can do a little exploration. Those without a car or bike can take the bus from the city of Chania. In any case, this particular beach is ideal for families staying in Chania and wanting to be within a short distance from the city because of the children.
Marathi
Marathi is relatively close by car (17 kilometers) southeast of the city of Chania. It’s beautiful and fully family-friendly. It’s a sandy beach (or rather two) with crystal clear, shallow waters that are perfect for families with children as it’s also sheltered, so you don’t need to worry. In addition, both beaches in Marathi are organized and provide all comforts, including restaurants waiting to welcome you as soon as you get hungry. To burn off the calories you’ve taken in, you can rent a sea bike.
Nea Chora
Just a stone’s throw away from the bustling heart of Chania, you’ll find the tranquil beach of Nea Chora. A mere kilometer from the city center, this beach is a haven for families with children who have made Chania their temporary home, or those who wish to retreat here after a day of exploration. The beach is a child’s dream, with shallow, azure waters and soft sand. It’s fully equipped with rentable sun loungers and umbrellas, offering all the comforts you’d expect. And when hunger strikes, you can satiate your appetite at one of the many seaside restaurants, or enjoy a leisurely coffee at a local café, all while the little ones delight in their ice creams.
Frangokastello
For those venturing to the picturesque region of Sfakia with their family, Frangokastello is a must-visit. A scenic 20-minute drive east of the town of Sfakia will bring you to this sandy, shallow beach, perfect for a family outing. Equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas, and welcoming taverns, it’s an idyllic spot for a day by the sea. But be warned, its size doesn’t deter the crowds. The beach’s namesake, the medieval “Castle of the Franks”, steeped in the legend of the Drosoulites, looms majestically over the area, adding a touch of history to your beach day.
Kalyves
For those seeking a quieter beach experience, away from the hustle and bustle, Kalyves is your sanctuary. Located 19 kilometers east of Chania, this expansive sandy beach, with its serene, shallow waters, is a paradise for children. It offers all the amenities you need for a comfortable day at the beach, including sun loungers, umbrellas, and a selection of seaside taverns for when the sea air whets your appetite.
Elafonisi
A mere 73 kilometers southwest of Chania, you’ll find the shallow, sandy beach of Elafonisi. This natural beauty spot boasts warm, turquoise waters and unique pink-hued sand. It’s a perennial favorite, consistently ranking among the most beautiful beaches in Greece. While it’s a popular summer destination, attracting throngs of tourists, its shallow waters and sandy shores make it ideal for children. Here, you and your little ones can cool off with a juice from the nearby beachside kiosks, and relax under the shade of an umbrella, as a large part of the beach is well-organized. The eponymous islet, a Natura area, is just a short walk through the shallow water.
Paleochora
Located 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Chania, the beautiful Paleochora is a must-visit. In addition to accommodation, food, and coffee, you can enjoy a swim at the area’s beaches, lapped by the waters of the Libyan Sea. Pachia Ammos beach is perfect for families with children, thanks to its crystal-clear waters and thick sand. You can relax under the umbrellas, as it’s a well-organized beach. When hunger strikes, the area’s taverns are waiting to welcome you. The town and the beach offer various activities (including water sports), so you won’t easily get bored if you decide to rent a room in the area.
