Alternatively, many cruises around the caldera are offered visitIng Palea and Nea Kameni and Thirasia, usually berthing for sunset beneath Oia. Options range from catamarans and speedboats through to fully crewed private yachts with your own chef and sommelier.

The harsh, dramatic landscape is ideal for touring on foot. The walk along the caldera rim from Fira to Oia is spectacular and one of the most enigmatic hikes in the Aegean. The route is 9 km and takes between three and four hours depending on stops. The cobbled path passes through Firostefani, Imerovigli, past Skaros and eventually on to Oia. Aim to arrive at sunset for one of nature’s great performances. There are many other trails in the interior and Thirasia particularly rewards those who enjoy walking.
The waters around Santorini are deep and clear with unique geological formations that are some of the most interesting in the Aegean. From snorkelling safaris to diving among sunken wrecks in Taxiarchis bay, there are companies to accommodate all levels of competency.
