The Blue Caves have existed far longer than human memory but only entered the modern imagination in 1897 when a man called Antonios Komouto, allegedly a Greek explorer, recorded their existence. Located near Cape Skinari at the island’s northern tip, they are a result of the Ionian’s relentless erosion, with cliffs slowly yielding to the rhythm of the waves. Over the centuries, the sea sculpted these formations, creating chambers and tunnels of various sizes.

What makes the caves most worth visiting is not just their geological structure but their light. At certain points of the day, sunbeams slice through the clear waters and reflect off the bright limestone seabed, filling the cave interiors with an unearthly blue radiance. The effect changes throughout the day – deeper and more intense in the morning and shimmering in the afternoon but is not always remarkable.

Some cave openings are wide enough for small boats to glide through, while others require visitors to swim under low rock arches, entering silent blue enclaves where the light dances across the stone.

To most enjoy the caves, aim to visit Zakynthos in eary summer or late summer and once there, head over as early in the morning as possible, especially possible to enjoy if you have rented a boat.

Boat tours leave frequently from Agios Nikolaos and the nearby port of Skinari, with local fishermen and tour operators offering small-group or private excursions. The caves are also accessible from Zakynthos Town and other harbors, often as part of a longer trip that used to include Navagio Beach, which is currently no longer accessible to the public, because of the risk of landslides. While organized tours are the most common option, those with access to a private boat can navigate to the caves on their own, anchoring nearby for a swim through the glowing tunnels. Here are some suggestions for making the most of your experience at the Blue Caves.
