Zakynthos has many reasons to be proud of its natural features. The National Marine Park of Zakynthos belongs to the Natura 2000 Network of Protected Areas and great emphasis is placed on environmental protection. Sea turtles Caretta Caretta and Mediterranean seals Monachus Monachus find refuge on the shores of the island, causing the interest of the global scientific community.
The Caretta Caretta Sea Turtle Thematic Exhibition Center: The exhibition and informative material, along with the use of multimedia, introduce the visitor to the wonderful world of the Caretta Caretta sea turtle. The purpose of the Center is to sensitize the public about the sea turtle and its nesting beaches in Zakynthos. In addition, a general overview is given of the activities of the E.T.P.Z. Management Body and the general environmental characteristics of the Protected Area, extending knowledge of other priority and endemic species of flora and fauna found in Zakynthos. The Blue Caves: They are one of the most well-known and advertised natural attractions of Zakynthos and are located in the northernmost point of the island, in the Skinnari cape, in the region of Aspro. You can only approach them by boat and swim in their crystal clear waters. They consist of a series of caves along the northwest coast of the island and owe their name to the particular reflections of the water inside them. In some of the caves, a small boat can enter the interior, while others can only be explored by experienced swimmers and divers. Swimming and diving with a mask in the crystal clear waters as well as exploring the caves is a unique experience. Tourist boats that will take you to the caves can be found at Makri Gialos, at the port of Saint Nikolas, and at the Skinnari cape.
Agios Sostis: Between Laganas and Keri, a small island is connected to the mainland via a small wooden bridge. The island, which was separated from the rest of the mainland by a major earthquake in 1663, has incredible natural beauty and is worth visiting. Its dense vegetation, crystal clear waters, and impressive caves make it one of the top attractions of Zakynthos. It’s a lovely place for a swim.Holy Church of Saint Dionysios: Saint Dionysios is the patron saint of the island and the locals honor his memory twice a year in a particularly nocturnal atmosphere. The church houses the holy relic of the Saint, which is placed inside a silver larnaca and is a place of pilgrimage for thousands of believers.
The Museum of Natural History of Chelmis offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the natural heritage of Zakynthos. The museum hosts valuable collections of at least 6,000 samples from the physical world. (Agia Marina, Tel. 2695 065040)
