A glimpse into the past
Elefsina, also known as Eleusis, is a town of historical and cultural significance located in the region of Attica, Greece. Situated approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Athens, this town is renowned for its connection to the cult of the ancient Greek goddesses Demeter and Persephone. The famous Eleusinian Mysteries, a series of annual rituals held in honor of these goddesses, took place in Elefsina.
In ancient times, Elefsina was also an important center of trade, situated along the main road that connected Athens and Corinth. The town boasted a number of impressive public buildings, including a theater and a temple to Demeter.
Throughout its long history, Elefsina has undergone numerous changes. During the Roman period, it flourished as a thriving city and important port. In the Middle Ages, it was a center of trade and commerce. In modern times, Elefsina has evolved into an industrial town, with several factories and industries within its borders. Despite these changes, Elefsina remains a destination of cultural and historical significance, and it is a popular choice for travelers seeking to explore the rich history of Greece.
The 2023 Eleusis program, titled “Mysteries 0 Transition,” draws upon the city’s rich history and features an integrated artistic, research, and educational program that centers around three main themes: People, Society, Labor, and Environment. These themes are referred to as the “Axes” of the program.
