Named after the “Thieves of the Sea,” or pirates, who once hid there, Kleftiko is a must-see, even if you’re only staying a few days. The landscape here is unique in Greece. It resembles a geological park with rocks that soar above the emerald-green waters like giant sculptures, and white cliffs that form large arches and caves. The small coves have exotic waters, perfect for exploring by swimming and snorkeling. It can be reached by excursion boats that depart from Adamas and Pollonia, or by private boat. The more adventurous can reach the caves via a two-hour hiking trail.

Papafragas

This very secluded cove on the northeastern coast of Milos is nestled between grey and white cliffs and has emerald-green waters. The caves, formed by volcanic materials, are ideal for small explorations. The waters of the bay flow into the sea, and directly opposite are the Glaronisia, three impressive rocks inhabited only by seagulls. They are made up mostly of andesite rocks that have formed into vertical columns with hexagonal or pentagonal prisms, a sight that can be gawped at even from the excursion boats that ply this side of the island. Near Papafragas are the archaeological sites of Phylakopi and Pollonia.

Alogomandra

Located between Sarakiniko and Papafragas, this beach has a distinctive curved rock that offers shade. The first small cove is known as Agios Konstantinos, while the second, larger one, is Alogomandra, which has sand and beautiful turquoise waters. Access is easy.

With crystal-clear waters that are delightful to swim in, small caves, a stunning seabed, and a sandy beach surrounded by tall cliffs in shades of orange, white and grey, Tsigrado is a gem. Landslides during the winter can make access difficult – hence the installation of ladders and ropes, and you descend “at your own risk,” as the sign says. If you’d prefer to avoid the challenge, consider arriving by boat. It’s located on the southern side of the island.

Fyriplaka

Very close to Tsigrado, Fyriplaka is a large, partially organized beach that stands out for its beauty. The large rock that appears to have washed up in the shallows, along with the shades of volcanic rocks with their fantastic shapes and sculpted forms, will have you snapping dozens of photos from every possible angle. The beach has sand and fine pebbles. Despite the summer crowds, its length ensures you’ll find a spot to lay your towel.

This sandy cove in the northwest side of the island is an ideal choice for swimming if you’re staying in Plaka. The beach is easily accessed and has a beach bar for those who want shade, coffee, and snacks. There are tamarisks, the waters are turquoise, and if you stay until late, you’ll enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Fyropotamos

The cove features a small seaside settlement with the characteristic “syrmata,” boat garages with colorful doors and windows. In winter, locals store their boats here, and in summer, they either reside in them or rent them out (similar structures can be found in Klima). The small fishing village is highlighted by the chapel of Agios Nikolaos. The beach beside it has lovely green waters and sand. Small hotels operate in the area.

Agia Kyriaki

Located to the southeast, near the port of Adamas, Agia Kyriaki is an extensive beach with tamarisks, crystal-clear turquoise waters, sand, and fine white pebbles. As in Paleochori, the sand temperature in some spots reaches 102 degrees Celsius. You’ll find beach bars, tavernas, boat rental companies, and some rental apartments.

Paleochori

On the southeastern side of Milos, Paleochori is a large and popular beach with sand and wonderful waters, distinguished by its vertical volcanic cliffs in shades of orange, red, lemon yellow, and white. A significant portion is free to access, while the rest has a beach bar and taverna. There are thermal springs at 50 degrees Celsius, and the sand temperature in some spots exceeds 100 degrees Celsius. Access is easy, and there are small hotels and rental rooms nearby.

Triades – Ammoudaraki – Agios Ioannis

It’s worth reaching these three unorganized, sandy beaches on the western side of the island with your own boat, where you’ll feel like you’re in paradise. You won’t tire of admiring and photographing the rocks with their striking colors, reminiscent of abstract art paintings. Access from land is via a dirt road and then a footpath.
