Welcome to Skopelos, an verdurous Greek island located in the northwest Aegean Sea, renowned for its stunning beaches and rich history. From the ancient Roman Baths to the stunningly picturesque chapel of Agios Ioannis, which starred in the hit movie ‘Mamma Mia!’, Skopelos has much to explore.
But no trip to Skopelos would be complete without a visit to the Church of Panagitsa Tou Pirgou, with its breathtaking views of the cerulean Aegean Sea and the charming Chora (main town) of Skopelos. Join us as we explore Skopelos’ must-visit historical and cultural sites.
Panagitsa Tou Pirgou church
Situated at the end of the old port, the Church of Panagitsa Tou Pirgou, or the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, is a must-visit historical and cultural gem. Climbing the 70 or so steps at the edge of town is the main way up to this picturesque landmark overlooking Skopelos’ harbour.
One of the best features of the church is the breathtaking view it offers. One side affords a stunning view of the Aegean Sea while the other side a sweeping vista of the charming Chora of Skopelos. Moreover, the interior of the church has some equally impressive icons dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The church itself was erected in the 17th century.
Vakratsa Mansion
Found in Skopelos Town centre and housed in a doctor’s 18th-century mansion. There are displays of medical instruments, books, clothes and furniture which give insight into life here in the 18th and 19th centuries. Combine your trip here with a visit to one of the excellent nearby beaches.
Folklore Museum
Occupying a restored 18th-century mansion, this handsome museum features a Skopelean wedding room, complete with traditional costumes and bridal bed, as well as collections of embroidery, woodcarving and other local crafts. Open daily from 08:00 to 15:00 and 18:30 to 23:00.
Evangelistrias Monastery
Just 3.5km (3.7 miles) east of Skopelos Town, this monastery was built in 1712. It offers excellent views across the coast. Its main attraction is a gilded iconostasis containing an 11th-century icon of the Virgin Mary. The monastery is looked after by just one nun.
Cape Amarandos
One of the many ‘Mamma Mia’ filming locations. From Skopelos town, head east. Cape Amarandos can be found south of Agnontas. The road becomes steep, rugged and dusty. This is 4×4 territory. There are plenty of private rocky beaches, perfect for a swim and subsequent picnic.
At a sharp left turn just over a kilometre south of the original turn-off, you’ll see a dramatic cleft in the rocks; follow the faint path along the cliff to the water’s edge, to discover a sea cave and pine shade.
Prodromou Monastery
6.5km (4.7 miles) northeast of Skopelos Town. Prodromou convent was built in the early 17th century and restored in the 18th century. Its chapel contains a 400 year old image of St John the Baptist, along with original frescoes.
Kastro
Only the walls of this 13th century fortress remain, skirting the cliffs at the northwest end of town. A maze of narrow streets leading to four churches.
Roman Baths
At the port of Loutraki, you can see the remains of the Roman baths. Loutraki is Greek for ‘small bath’.
Agios Ioannis
The stunningly picturesque chapel of Agios Ioannis, sits high up on the rocks, surrounded by the shimmering Aegean 5.5km (3.7 miles) east of Glossa. There is a small pebble beach below. It is not difficult to see why it was chosen as the location of the wedding venue in ‘Mamma Mia!’ Pace yourself, as the walk up has around 200 steps.
Metamorphosis Sotiros Monastery
4km (2.9 miles) from the main town, the island’s oldest monastery is occupied by a single monk.
Monastery of Agia Varvara
From its majestic hillside perch 6km (3.1 miles) northeast of Skopelos Town, the fortress-like 17th-century Moni Varvaras looks out over its neighbour, Prodromou, and the bay below. It’s disused, but a caretaker can show you around.
Antoniou Family Olive Press
Located east of the village of Glossa, this 130-year-old, family-owned mill produces fine extra virgin olive oil that is harvested traditionally. Visitors can tour the modern facilities (audio guides are available), taste products and, of course, stock up in the shop. Call ahead.
