Getting to the island of Karpathos, located between Crete and Rhodes in the Aegean Sea, can be achieved by air or by sea. Here are the two primary ways to reach this beautiful Greek island:
Getting There
By air:
Karpathos has an airport (Karpathos Island National Airport – AOK) that operates domestic flights from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Rhodes, as well as charter flights from several European cities during the high season (typically from May to October). The main airline servicing the island is Olympic Air, a subsidiary of Aegean Airlines.
From Athens International Airport (ATH), there are daily direct flights to Karpathos, with a flight duration of approximately one hour. Connecting flights via Rhodes or other nearby islands may also be available. During the high season, more flights and routes may be added to accommodate the increased demand. It’s always best to check with the airlines or a travel agency for the most up-to-date schedules and availability.
By sea
Karpathos is well-connected by ferries and catamarans with other nearby islands and mainland Greece. The two main ports on the island are Pigadia (the capital) and Diafani.
From Piraeus Port in Athens, there are regular ferry services to Karpathos, operated by Blue Star Ferries and Aegeon Pelagos. The journey can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours, depending on the ferry and route. Keep in mind that schedules may change according to the season, so it’s a good idea to confirm the timings in advance.
Additionally, Karpathos is connected by ferry with other nearby islands such as Rhodes, Crete, Kasos, and Halki. The frequency and duration of these connections vary depending on the route and season. You can find more information and book tickets through various ferry booking websites or local travel agencies.
