Getting There
Sikinos, a serene and picturesque island in the Cyclades, is located close to Ios and Santorini. To visit Sikinos, travelers need to take a ferry, as the island is accessible only by sea from Athens (Piraeus port) and other Aegean islands, such as Santorini, Folegandros, Ios, and Naxos.
By Boat
The most common way to reach Sikinos is by boarding a ferry from Piraeus, the main port in Athens. Ferries typically operate around three times per week, with increased frequency during the high season. The ferry trip from Piraeus to Sikinos takes approximately 5 to 9 hours, depending on the type of ferry and specific route. High-speed ferries offer quicker journeys at a higher cost, while conventional ferries provide a slower, more economical option. It’s highly recommended to reserve your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak travel periods.
By Plane
While Sikinos doesn’t have an airport, the nearest one is Santorini National Airport (JTR), also known as Thira Airport. It serves domestic flights between Athens and Santorini and connects to several international airports across Europe. Santorini’s airport is located near Monolithos, on the northern side of Kamari village. From the airport, travelers can use public buses or taxis to reach the port of Santorini and then board a ferry to Sikinos, which takes an additional 2-3 hours.
Getting Around
Upon arrival at Sikinos’ primary harbor, Alopronia, visitors can use local buses or taxis to reach their accommodation or explore the island’s beautiful beaches, charming villages, and historical landmarks. For those who prefer more flexibility and independence while discovering Sikinos, renting a car or scooter is a viable option.
