If it were a song, it would be “Summertime and the living is easy.”
If it were a rhythm, it would be that of traditional dances that make us twirl with hands on shoulders at the festivals of the Savior and the Virgin Mary.
If it were a taste, it would be that of a peach hastily rinsed in the sea, a slice of chilled watermelon, a fig sweeter because we picked it ourselves from a tree in the middle of nowhere, a bunch of grapes whose sweetness we’ll savor on the beach and whose nectar we’ll enjoy in tavernas, clinking glasses with friends.
If it were a sound, it would be that of waves breaking on the shore.
If it were a sensation, it would be the sea breeze and dried salt on sun-kissed skin. If it were an image, it would be one of the dozens of photos we’ll look at nostalgically on our phones in winter.
August is all these things and thousands more big and small moments. It will pass quickly, like surfers speeding past our gaze propelled by August’s meltemi winds, so let’s live it to the fullest and as it deserves: with travels, excursions, and adventures to familiar and beloved places or to unknown spots waiting to captivate us.
