On Samothrace, an island synonymous with alternative tourism, travelers will find pleasures beyond the lure of the sea. At the heart of the island is Mt Saos, which rises to a height of 1,611 meters. It is also known as Feggari (Moon) because in ancient times the inhabitants believed that its considerable mass would hide the moon itself.

The presence of such a towering mountain on an island of just 178 square kilometers defines its unique geographical identity. This mountainous mass shapes the island’s morphology, vegetation and wildlife, as well as its appeal to tourists. The waters that flow from the mountain cascade down its slopes, forming numerous waterfalls and natural pools. Hiking in these gorges and swimming in these pools is what attracts nature lovers from all over the world to Samothrace. They come especially to experience the breathtaking pools and waterfalls of the Fonias Gorge.

The name of the river is Fonias, which means murderer in Greek. Probably because it is the most famous torrent on the island, linked to legends of people lost in its raging waters, even though no specific incidents have been recorded.

In reality, the Fonias Gorge is one of the most idyllic places to hang out in Greece and is accessible to everybody, regardless of physical fitness or familiarity with such outdoor activities.

Getting There

A few miles past the village of Therma, you’ll find signs for Fonias Canyon. After about half an hour’s easy walk through lush vegetation, you’ll reach the first large pool and waterfall. Time for a dip in the refreshing (verging on cold) water. Even if nature activities aren’t normally your style, the experience these waters offer is truly unforgettable. Those seeking a more “private” experience should avoid visiting during the peak season in August when the island sees the largest number of visitors to the pools.

The next pools are more difficult and it’s recommended that you visit them only if you are experienced or have the assistance of a guide or someone familiar with the area. To get to the second basin, you’ll have to cross a stone-strewn, uphill path and move through a narrower area as the gorge narrows. After about 20 more minutes, you’ll arrive at the natural lake, which is also the largest pool in the gorge.

To reach the third and final pool, you will have to walk for 45 minutes, which requires good physical shape and sturdy footwear. There you will find the largest waterfall in the gorge, where the water plunges from a height of about 35 meters. Whichever pool you choose, swimming under the waters of Fonias Falls is a life-changing experience.

Tips and Information for Your Trip

The main ferry connection to Samothrace is from the port of Alexandroupolis. During the summer, ferries also connect the island with the Northern Aegean islands of Lemnos and Thasos, as well as the city of Kavala.

The culinary hallmark of the island is goat meat, known for its deliciousness because the animals graze freely and drink seawater. Local desserts include prausousti, a “spoon sweet” (syrupy sweets that are eaten with a spoon) made from a fruit similar to the quince. The island’s honey is also famous for its bittersweet taste.

The Klidossi, known as the largest waterfall of Fonias Canyon, is not the tallest waterfall in Samothrace. The tallest is called Kremasto Nero, located at the southernmost part of the island. There, the water tumbles from a height of 180 meters into the sea, and the easiest way to visit is by boat. However, descending the waterfall is also possible but requires experience in canyoning.

If you are looking for sandy beaches with the facilities of a large organized beach, then this may not be the island for you. Here, the beaches are typically pebbly and natural, as explained above, and much of the “aquatic” experience on the island takes place in the pools.

Nevertheless, at Pachia Ammos you will find a beach bar and a restaurant as well as sand. It is the most popular and organized beach on the island, with the additional advantage of being sheltered from the waves even on windy days.
