Agistri, a small, unpretentious and scenic Argosaronic island just an hour’s boat ride from Piraeus, offers an ideal getaway from the bustle of Athens. Its dense forests of aromatic pine trees, a laid-back atmosphere, and the cool, crystal-clear waters of several pretty beaches are inviting, as is the beach of Halikiada.

Reaching Halikiada is an adventure in itself and requires a hiking spirit, as you can only access it on foot by following the coastal road from Skala in the southeast. After passing Skliri beach, you’ll traverse a pine forest along a narrow path of around 500 meters long, reaching a point with a magnificent view from above. Take care as you descend to the beach, making sure you wear steadying footwear as there is a steep rock face on the path (fortunately, the return trek is far easier).

But the effort is well worth it. Upon arrival, you’ll come across a shore of large white pebbles and refreshingly cool waters that deepen abruptly about five meters from the shore. Make sure to bring drinking water as there are no facilities here. Snorkeling gear is highly recommended to explore the beautiful seabed.

If you prefer an easier option, nearby Skliri beach is a great alternative. This small cove has clear waters and a mix of sand and pebbles, reachable via a picturesque path lined with white houses and greenery.

A visit to this corner of the Saronic Gulf will quickly reveal why Halikiada and Agistri are longtime favorites among nature lovers seeking a quick escape from urban life without having to travel far or at a high cost.

Tips and Information for Your Stay in Agistri

The only pharmacy on the island is in Skala, the main town, while ATMs are available in both Skala and Megalochori.

Agistri is just 14 square kilometers in size. You don’t need a car, but you can rent a scooter or bicycle if you’re up for exploring the island’s hilly terrain.

Walking distances: Skala to Megalochori takes less than 20 minutes. Megalochori to Dragonera beach is about a 35-minute walk, and from Skala to the third village, Limenaria, it’s a little over an hour’s walk. For such a small place, Agistri surprisingly offers many great dining options. You can find more details about these here.

During the summer months, Agistri is frequently connected by boat to the coasts of Methana and Epidaurus. So, if you’re staying for several days, you can combine your Agistri vacation with a day trip and enjoy a theatrical performance organised by the Athens Epidaurus Festival (Athens Epidaurus Festival 2024: The Complete Program | travel.gr).
