Leaving behind Paralio Astros, we head towards Tyros. Nearly four years ago, during a previous visit to the area, I recall venturing down to the refreshing springs of the Moustos wetland. Recently, I returned to this picturesque locale with Kostis Angelopoulos, a photographer and colleague. Kostis, a native of Arcadia and a frequent visitor to Astros throughout his youth and into his current age of 24 reminisced, “Swimming at the springs was our favorite pastime,” prompting us to revisit this cherished spot. Knowing the area like the back of his hand, he led us through a shortcut that helped us avoid a congested construction zone. In about five minutes, we reached the wetland parking area. This spot is ideal for bird-watching, a pursuit we planned to indulge in later, as our immediate goal was to revisit the springs.

At the Springs

Just a short walk from the parking area, a brief cement path diverges from the main road, leading directly to the springs. The sight of clear, bubbling water was immediately enticing, and despite the warm March air – that day tinged with African dust – it beckoned us to dive in. A cautionary sign advises wearing footwear to navigate the sharp rocks encircling the springs. Touching the icy water, I’m struck by its chill. Kostis notes, “Even during the peak of summer, the water here retains a bracing coolness that’s incredibly rejuvenating.”

Walking Through the Wetlands

We soon continued towards the heart of the wetland. Situated about two kilometers south of Astros, near Tyros and Leonidio in Eastern Peloponnese, this vital environmental haven boasts a rich tapestry of biodiversity. Moustos Lake, along with its marsh and twin man-made channels linking it to the sea, provides sanctuary to numerous migratory birds and is essential for the region’s wildlife, including waterfowl, reptiles, and fish.

The Origin of the Must

The name ‘Moustos’ originates from ‘must,’ referencing the grape juice from local vineyards and the area’s historical role as a shipping port. This connection adds a rich historical and cultural dimension to the region. The lake, nourished by a spring with slightly saline water, is celebrated for its therapeutic qualities, thanks to its sulfur-rich salts. These features make it a popular destination for those seeking health and wellness amidst nature.

Natura 2000 Protected Area

The entirety of Moustos Wetlands is integrated into the European Natura 2000 network, a testament to its environmental significance and the ongoing need to protect and preserve these invaluable natural resources.

At the Observation Point

Advancing along the dirt path, we reached a wooden observation deck. Nearby, various bird species soared. Using a drone to minimize disturbance, Kostis captured more of the surrounding beauty. Viewing the footage on a small screen, I felt profound satisfaction about our location. Revisiting these images, I marveled at the sheer amount of beauty captured in each frame and found myself nostalgically recalling that splendid morning amid the wetland’s rustic paths. Here, beauty lies hidden in the authenticity of the place, revealed only through the quiet it demands.
