We wandered about the Peloponnese’s mountainous Arcadia region, enjoying our exploration of the fir-tree forests, along marked trails. The wider area is filled with interesting things, increasing the temptation for repeat visits and further discovery.
We have returned to Vytina and Dimitsana, two of the area’s villages, on a number of occasions, coming to know great food and drink spots, six of which we present here, offering goods such as delicious pies, galaktoboureko (semolina custard pastry), traditional diples (fried pastries with honey), as well as fine coffee and wine. Any selections made at these spots promise to delight and leave a lasting impression as gastronomy creates experiences and memories.
Maestro confectionary shop
“From the time the sweet shop in Vytina began producing kourabiedes (almond shortbread biscuits), we stopped making them at home,” informed one local granny we encountered at the village. Arriving at the Maestro confectionary shop, we were welcomed with a treat of kariokas (chocolate and walnut biscuit) and spent some time there marveling at the range of goods.

Liaropoulos, traditional bakery with a wood-fired oven
The wood-fired oven at the Liaropoulos bakery in Vytina has burnt without interruption since 1917, producing leavened bread, as well as a variety of delicious pies. Theodoros Liaropoulos, this family venture’s third-generation representative who grew up in the bakery learning the tricks of the trade, has transformed the bakery into a modern shop offering a wide gamut of choices.

Kapnopoleio Espresso Bar, Vytina
A modern and, at the same time, hospitable place next to the Vytina village square, Kapnopoleio is a meeting point for quality coffee, drinks, as well as tasty snacks. An intelligently designed space with an urban feel, it utilises every single corner, while three small tables set at the footpath on the opposite side of the street offer an extra dimension.
