With its unpretentious Aegean beauty, its spiritually mystic, sophisticated atmosphere, and its refined cosmopolitan air, Patmos can captivate visitors of all kinds. Patmos, or “the island of Revelation” as it’s known, given that it’s the place where, according to Christian tradition, Christ’s beloved disciple John the Evangelist heard the voice of God, is renowned for its religious heritage.

The maze-like cobbled streets, the flagstoned squares, the traditional mansions, the crystalline beaches, and the fine food all contribute to its allure. What follows are gastronomic choices that make the “Jerusalem of the Aegean” a prime destination for the food-savvy as well.

A firm favorite for those desiring Greek and international dishes with an emphasis on local ingredients as the core element. Fried calamari is served with a lemon-ginger sauce, tuna fillet is sautéed with herbs and presented with soy and wasabi, while the desserts are all hand-crafted. The establishment is also well-known for its splendid garden and inventive cocktails. At its ‘younger sibling,’ Benetos Chora, which, as the name suggests, is located in the main town, you can indulge in tasty breakfast or brunch.

Since 1955, the eponymous fish tavern on Lambi Beach has been considered one of the best on the island. You’ll delight in a meal at tables set upon the pebbles, with fresh fish and seafood brought in daily by the tavern’s own fishing boat. The salads too are of their own cultivation, harvested from their garden. Opt for tender wine-infused octopus, fried calamari, lobsters, and zucchini flowers stuffed with cheese.

Tarsanas

Right by the water’s edge, Tarsanas began as a shipyard service station. However, the owner had grander visions and transformed it into one of the best tavernas on the island. The wooden veranda, with its adapted ship complete with bow and stern, provides benches, sofas, and large wooden tables. You are encouraged to sit near the hatch, under triangular sails, to savor fish, seafood, and traditional cooked dishes. The establishment is open from the morning for coffee and sweets as well.

At the top of the hill in the Sapsila area, with a panoramic view of the bay and the Loukakia beach with the Pilafi island across from it, you’ll find the restaurant this place that serves modern Mediterranean cuisine. We learned about this family-run business, that first opened in 2015, when we ran into Hristos Katsimitis, the owner’s father, early in the morning picking organic cherry tomatoes from their little field in Grikos. n a lovely, cosmopolitan environment with well-spaced tables around the pool, we tried the prime skirt steak Black Angus with vegetables and mashed organic potatoes and the balanced millefeuille with white chocolate and framboise.

The embodiment of simplicity. Picture a small courtyard, a handful of tables, and a modest grill. Upon it, great tentacles of octopus are placed before your eyes, destined soon to land upon your table. The Pantheon, or as the locals affectionately call it, ‘Giangou’s’, serves meat dishes as well, but the emphasis is on the utter basics: potatoes, salads, beer, and ouzo. But really, why would anyone want to complicate tastes and moods?

Vaggelis Restaurant

In the dreamy square of Agia Levia, the main square of Patmos’ Hora, that resembles a movie set, restaurant Vaggelis has been open since 1970. A meeting point for visitors for decades, this tavern passionately preserves its original idea and ideals. They serve Mediterranean food with modern influences. The square plays a part, but it’s the food that makes all the difference. The restaurant is also known for its beef, the rabbit stew, the shrimp and calamari giouvetsi, and the goat shank that cooks for six hours with a variety of herbs. And when you’re done with your meal, you can order a cocktail from Stoa, next door.

Psilli Ammos

Still in your wet swimsuit and sandy toes, under the tamarisk trees, you’ll hear the voices of vibrant groups mix with the sound of the waves. Dionysia Giameou, always cheerful, is constantly on the move, serving well-made food. Roast chicken and potatoes, soutzoukakia and roast goat. In fact, you can order in advance and secure a serving of your favorite dish. Even their simple omelets sell out, either for breakfast or for an after-swim snack. The beach is lovely, and this small tavern only adds to the setting. You’ll need trainers, a hat, sunblock and water before heading here on foot, but it will be worth it.

At the western edge of Skala, you’ll find a classic fish tavern – ouzeri, where you can enjoy your ouzo with mezze. Isidoros Kamitsis proudly shows us the fresh fish of the day that they have fished, while his father, Nikos Kamitsis, checks the coal before the first guests arrive. They don’t take reservations. The simplicity of the food with wild greens, vegetables and daily fish, homemade taramosalata prepared by Maria, Isidoros’ mother, “the boss” as they call her, is just excellent.

Nikos Konstantinou has curated the menu at this Mediterranean restaurant with strong Italian influences at the five-star hotel Patmos Aktis in Grikos. The plates are always styled beautifully, combining the culinary pleasure with the visual pleasure. Start with a refreshing carpaccio and then try the crispy cannolo with melon, celery and cress, and finish with the yellow fin tuna marinated in citrus with avocado, mango compote and dried bonito. The pasta dishes are also deeply comforting.
