The flavours of three supreme Cycladic islands journeying their renown across the globe: Magnificent Cycladic islands distinguished by their traditional settlements, exquisite beaches, and local produce.

16

Scattered across the Aegean yet bound by an invisible red thread, these islands form a cluster that prioritises creating impactful experiences for visitors centred around local products and flavours. The volcanic landscapes of Milos and Santorini, beyond crafting an unusual, at times alien, backdrop, also serve as fertile grounds for producing local delicacies of exceptional quality and taste. The dehydrated volcanic soil works in their favour, rendering these products sought-after globally.

Simultaneously, Naxos, one of the most prosperous Cycladic islands in terms of product yield, blends harmoniously with them, collectively creating a bouquet of products that manage to impress even the most discerning palates. Local connoisseurs have, over time, chosen these products to craft recipes of unique flavour that continue to accompany our daily lives even today. In addition to these, the three islands flaunt numerous beauties, traditional settlements, stunning beaches, neighbourhoods, and vantage points with emblematic views.

On the enchanting island of Milos

Initiating this journey of taste, we focus on Milos and the famous sweet bonbon, traditionally made and served at weddings on the island. Its main ingredient is the anhydrous round pumpkin, complemented by sugar, honey, almonds, and lemon juice. The pumpkin rind is used in its preparation, cut into small sticks, and to be deemed successful, the candy must remain crunchy. Another characteristic product of Milos is the pulp made from tomatoes grown on the island. Once harvested, the tomatoes are left in the sun for 2-3 days, after which they are pulped, separating the seeds and skins from the juice.

Thyme honey, esteemed as one of the finest, together with the caper, which thrives on the island and is harvested at the cusp of spring and early summer, transforms into the perfect accompaniment for a glass of tsipouro or ouzo. It also finds its rightful place in a salad. The caper, both fruit and leaves, bring a gastronomically balanced twist to the rustic salad, imparting a distinctive approach to this classic choice. Meanwhile, the pies have an important traditional place on the island. Small pies, or pitarakia, are crafted with xerotiri or mizithra cheese and mint, adding a unique and striking note. Rustic barley or rye rings, touloumotyri cheese, and local sausages complement the spectrum of taste sensations.

Milos, the island of contrasts, synthesis and balance, presents nearly 70 beaches that can cater to every mood. Some with sand, others with pebbles or even smooth rocks, each finds its own audience and makes a summer seem more authentic, closer to our values and roots. The volcano is a distinct chapter of the island, considered active by scientists. A visit will convince you, as you’ll hear its breath and find yourself in front of gas vents reaching temperatures of 100 degrees Celsius. Intertwined with the island and its inhabitants, the significance of the volcano, and more generally the mineral wealth, is revealed to your eyes through a visit to the Mining Museum and the catacombs.

However, you mustn’t miss the opportunity to visit Klima, a stunning fishing village known for its vibrant colours and its ‘syrmatas’, the seafront boat garages. Plaka, the island’s capital, with its characteristic small Cycladic houses, narrow cobbled lanes, concealed squares with cafes and tavernas, and the exceptional view of the mainland and sea, is the ideal place for leisurely strolls and for enjoying the island’s finest sunset from the Venetian castle.

In the iconic Santorini

The fava, the cherry tomato, the wine, barley and capers typify the island’s produce – favoured by visitors for their unparalleled quality. Wine is the most recognisable product, originating from vineyards that predominantly lie inland. The island’s volcanic terroir plays a pivotal role in its quality and the distinctive nature of its bouquet. The most notable wines are whites, with Assyrtiko firmly in the limelight.

The effulgent white houses juxtaposed with the graphite hue of the volcano create an otherworldly beauty that captivates before you’ve even set foot on the island. The awe you feel as you approach this volcanic mass is unparalleled and if you wish for that sensation to linger, opt to stay in Fira, Imerovigli or Oia, delicately built atop the caldera, offering the finest vistas of the Nea Kameni volcano and Thirasia. Your day on the island’s cosmopolitan western side, which seems to precariously cling to the cliff edge, begins with breakfast overlooking the volcano and ends with signature cocktails by the pool.

However, these areas draw the crowds so if a more understated holiday is what you seek, consider the inland villages such as Pyrgos, with its medieval castle and Venetian characteristics, or Emporeio, with its Kasteli, narrow alleyways, arcades and charming courtyards. As for the beaches, they are unlike those in the other Cyclades. Dark grey sand and black pebbles are their defining traits. Vlychada, Red Beach, and White Beach are well worth a visit for their unique landscapes as well as their crystal-clear waters. Worthwhile too is the hike that begins in Pyrgos, passes Ancient Thira – offering vistas reaching all the way to Anafi – and ends in Kamari. Naturally, an excursion to the volcano of Nea Kameni is an absolute must.

On the Verdant Naxos

Naxos, green and lush, breathes life into the Cyclades. It is the archipelago’s largest island, known for its picturesque beaches, mountainous expanses, medieval castles, Venetian towers and ancient temples. Its fertile soil nurtures an abundance of delightful produce – potatoes, vegetables, and citrus fruits. And not to forget the island’s acclaimed gruyere, with its flavours reaching every corner of the world. Don’t miss out on tasting the ham, and the distinctively named cheese, ‘Arseniko’.

To glimpse the true countenance of Naxos, leave the coast behind and venture into the hinterland. Take a pause in the village of Filoti for a coffee beneath the expansive plane tree in the square. Continue to Apeiranthos, stroll down its narrow streets and through the arched passageways, and make sure to stop at Lefteris for a slice of delectable galaktoboureko and a glass of refreshing water. You must also pay a visit to Halki, where Cycladic houses harmoniously mix with Venetian architecture. Eastern Naxos has its unique allure hidden away as well. Its extensive, smooth coastline gifts the island with easily accessible, splendid, sandy beaches to cater to every taste: Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios or Glyfada, choose any, and you will be delighted by the sun and the sea.
