As the most significant estate in Thessaloniki’s greater area, Gerovassiliou Estate is celebrated for its extensive vineyards, rich history, and remarkable Wine Museum. Founded by agronomist Evangelos Gerovassiliou in 1981, the estate revived his family’s vineyards in Epanomi. Gerovassiliou’s prior work at Porto Carras in the 1970s led to the preservation and recognition of Malagousia, a now-beloved grape. The estate’s 1,200 hectares host Malagousia, which covers half of the vineyard, alongside Assyrtiko, Viognier, Limnio, and Syrah. A visit reveals wines of distinct character, like the classic White blending Malagousia and Assyrtiko, alongside Avaton and Evangelo reds. The museum, home to 3,000 corkscrews and wine artifacts, stands as a top destination.

Located in Kalohori, west of Thessaloniki, Kechris Winery has redefined retsina, elevating its status under Stelios Kechris, who took over in 1984. Award-winning creations like “Tear of the Pine,” a barrel-aged Assyrtiko retsina, highlight subtle resin aromas and refined complexity. Beyond retsina, their Genesis and 4th Dimension wines offer exceptional quality, and the winery collaborates with mixologists to create unique cocktails based around their wines’ special flavor ID. The winery also makes liqueurs like Cranberry and Walnut, that you can taste on-site. Visits there are enhanced by passionate tours with Kechris himself.
