Hotel prices in popular European destinations are at higher levels this December compared to last year, due to demand over the Christmas period.

As far as Athens is concerned, prices remain particularly low, as they are by far the most favourable compared to other popular destinations, rendering the holiday package highly attractive.

Although there is uncertainty as to how traffic will ultimately shape up following the spread of the Omicron mutation leading to new travel destinations, in several countries booking numbers are certainly better than during last year’s Christmas holidays, when various forms of lockdown were in place in most countries.

Specifically, Trivago search engine data for December in terms of the average online price per night per double room at hotels in popular European destinations look as follows: in Amsterdam the average price is €170 against €122 in December 2020, in Barcelona €129 against €111, in Berlin €116 against €95, in Brussels €141 against €118, in Dublin €167 against €133, in Lisbon €125 against €100, in Madrid €152 against €106, in Paris €187 against €144, in Rome €123 against €105, in Vienna €149 against €131 and in Zurich €211 against €183.

Looking beyond Europe’s borders, of particular interest are the increases in Dubai hotel rates, where the average price in December this year amounts to €230 compared to €131 in December 2020, and in New York hotel rates, where prices have climbed to €341 compared to €176 in December 2020.

Athens – the city with the lowest prices and new hotel investments

In Athens, the average online price per night in a double hotel room is €95 this month compared to €90 in December last year.

Moreover, in Athens, the approval process for supporting business groups that have launched hotel investments in the city continues. In this context, Attica Region has recently approved the inclusion in the support scheme of an investment project by the company AKINITA EVRIPIDOU 84 I.K.E., which concerns the conversion of existing office buildings, located at 84 Evripidou Street, into a 3-star hotel unit with a capacity of 41 rooms – 100 beds, for a total eligible cost of €1.7 million. Furthermore, it approved the inclusion in the support scheme of an investment project by the company EVRIPIDOU PROPERTIES, which concerns the conversion of two existing residential buildings on Evripidou Street into a new 3-star hotel unit with a capacity of 63 rooms – 100 beds, for a total eligible cost of €2.8 million.

Finally, it approved the inclusion in the support scheme of an investment project by the company PIMANSO S.A., which concerns the restoration of the building at 7 Louka Nika Street and the adjacent complex of buildings at 9 Louka Nika Street in the area of Psirri and the subsequent creation of an innovative luxury 5-star boutique hotel with a capacity of 19 rooms – 46 beds, for a total eligible cost of €1.79 million.
