The neighbourhood of Pagrati began to develop as early as 1886, in the area where the river Ilissos was still flowing at that time (it still flows today, but is no longer visible). The name is first found in 1920 and is attributed to German maps of 1891, which probably borrowed it from the sanctuary of Hercules of Pagrati located at the junction of King Constantine Avenue and King George II Street. Pagratis was an ancient Chthonian god, whose worship was gradually merged with that of Hercules.
During the interwar period, Pagrati experienced great development. Thanks to its proximity to the Zappeion, but also to the Kallimarmaro Stadium and the famous Grove in the area of Eftychidou Street, it became the centre of life for the whole of (then) south-eastern Athens. After the 1950s it was filled with apartment buildings, but also became a commercial centre, and became even more famous thanks to Manos Hadjidakis, who lived there. Around 2000 there was a temporary decline, but the area revived in the following decade thanks to the opening of many shops in Varnava, Proskopon and Plastira squares, which became -and remain- popular haunts of Athenian youth.
