Having spent a large part of their life abroad, the stylist Anna Zichenko and the architect Loukas Bobotis decided one day that they would like to have – apart from their permanent home – another place that would constitute a reference point in their lives. A village, that would become the base and refuge for the family.
The choice was a one-way street. As they both love Tinos, they envisioned a more relaxed life in one of the over 45 villages on the island. “Tinos still has people during the winter and that is something we both like,” Anna tells me.
The energy of the island works like a magnet. Not only in the summer months, when it is full of visitors and life. On Tinos, all four seasons have their own magic. Many are those who have chosen to return and build a new life on the island. Braving the winds and conquering the wild wintry seas.
The house in Falatados
The next challenge was finding a house that could be converted into a modern home, preserving its traditional features, that would cover the needs of the couple and their two children. The traditional house they chose was originally built in 1910 on the mountain village Falatados and it was remodeled by Bobotis+Bobotis Architects so as to have facilities and spaces found in modern houses.
Each space of the renovated house redefines the original functions of the building and revives these spaces in a modern way.

On the lowest level, the ‘katói’, the animals were originally housed, as well as a grape press. On the first floor, the ‘anói’ was where the main house was. These two spaces have always been autonomous, and they continue to be separated, connected by an outdoors staircase that also provides access to the village’s main cobbled street.

These historic, traditional uses were taken into account during the remodel. On the upper level a mezzanine, that is supported by a metal beam, was added creating an additional “open” bedroom. On the ground level, the spot where the press used to be, has been turned into a bed with storage space. The original structural details, like the beams and the arches, have been preserved.

The renovated house has a large open-plan kitchen. A modern wood burning stove distributes hot air throughout the house during the winter. At the back of the house, a vegetable garden with herbs and vegetables is accessible from the kitchen and is part of the house’s garden, which also has access to the roof that has a view of the Venetian Castle of Exombourgo.

Life in Tinos
The first summer was a crash test. They placed two mattresses on the floor and stayed in their new home without many comforts.
During the 1st lockdown in Greece, they went to Tinos for a week and ended up staying for more than five months. “It was quite the wake-up call,” Anna tells me, “we suddenly had access to a beautiful reality, we spent quality time with our children, and we got to know the island and its needs.” And when Anna says needs she means that Tinos had enough space for a multi-culti store she always dreamed of.
“During the 2nd lockdown, that my work came to a standstill, we decided with Loukas to return to the island and start working on what I had envisioned. So, we found a lovely space and we remodelled it.”

Katsika
Katsika, the couple’s store, is far from the high street and the island’s crowds. This was a conscious choice, Anna tells me, as it is nice to look for a location that interests you. It has a special charm.
And if the name (it means goat in Greek) sounds strange to you, there’s a great explanation: “The island is full of goats. It’s name you remember and it’s funny, because we mustn’t take ourselves too seriously,” Anna explains laughing.
At Katsika (which has – rightfully so – flooded Instagram) you can find unique pieces from various countries. “As I’m of Ukrainian origin, I brought caftans and tops from my country, that combine tradition with modern techniques.
Having worked at large women’s brands for a long time, and with a deep knowledge of fashion, Anna Zichenko used her knowledge and love of clothes to select amazing caftans and dresses in impressive prints for Katsika.
My favourite item from Katsika is the menorquina shoes that even Picasso wore.

Apart from clothes and shoes, at the store you can find French candles, African rattan bags and hats, as well as some unique Greek pieces. In a Moroccan corner you’ll find small furniture and dishes. “This winter, apart from the e-shop that’s in the works, I’m also launching my own clothes’ line, with monochrome basic items,” Anna revealed.
However, what she loves most about Tinos is its people. Their quality is rare, she tells me. “The love we receive is touching. Every day we find vegetables and other goods at our door and we don’t even know who brings them.”
