On Monday 27 December, the Greek Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, announced new measures to curb the spread of the new Omicron variant, following the recommendations of Greece’s health committee.
The new measures will come into force from 3 January to 16 January. During his speech, the Minister noted that the new measures would not be implemented before January 1st because that would encourage house gatherings, which would lead to a greater spread of the virus.
The new measures are as follows:
-The use of high protection masks (KN95 or FFP2) or double masks will be compulsory in supermarkets, public transport and for staff in catering establishments.
-Entertainment venues will have to close at midnight. Standing customers are not allowed. Each table will seat a maximum of 6 people and safety distances must be maintained. For the time being, music is allowed unless measures are not observed.
–Sports stadiums will only be allowed to operate at 10% of capacity, with a maximum of 1,000 to 2,000 spectators.
-If someone wants to visit a care facility for the elderly and chronically ill, a PCR test will be required.
–Teleworking will increase by 50% in both public and private sectors.
