The government has decided to requisition rooms in 5-star tourist accommodation in Mykonos as there are no beds available on the island to accommodate emergency cases of tourists diagnosed with coronavirus.

The government was forced to take this decision due to its inability to deal differently with public health emergencies related to the fight against coronavirus, as evidenced by the fact that there was no response from Mykonos’ tourist accommodation to a series of appeals issued by the Ministry of Tourism to provide tourist accommodation for rent in order to deal with possible outbreaks.

In particular, according to the relevant decision co-signed by Health Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, and the Deputy Minister of Finance, Theodoros Skylakakis, 34 rooms in 5 tourist accommodation on the island will be requisitioned.
The above tourist accommodation was made available to the State from yesterday and until 30 September, in order to meet public health needs and especially to provide temporary accommodation and board to Covid-19 patients, so as to prevent the transmission of the virus.

The value of the compensation for tourist accommodation is calculated per room and amounts to EUR 60/day if the rooms are used, including the cost of meals and VAT, and EUR 15/day including VAT if the rooms remain vacant. Tourist accommodation shall be reserved exclusively for hosting coronavirus cases and persons caring for or accompanying them. With regard to the guests’ board, the health protocols foreseen for each business cooperating with the accommodation shall be respected and meals shall be distributed exclusively by the staff of the accommodation to the guests.

The compensation remains due for the entire duration of the compulsory supplementary measure, i.e. until 30 September, and is paid by the Ministry of Health to tourist accommodation establishments within 30 days of the submission of the required supporting documents after the expiry of the compulsory supplementary measure.

It should be noted that, for the purposes of public health protection, the management of tourist accommodation establishments must keep a record of staff members and all persons staying in the tourist accommodation: name, nationality, date of arrival and departure, contact details (address, telephone, e-mail), so that close contacts of any coronavirus case may be subsequently traced and contacted.
