The impressive tourism-sector rebound this season on Mykonos and Santorini has generated investment interest for development of new luxury hotels at these popular Greek destinations.
According to market estimates, project subsidies and licenses concerning more than 100 investments, primarily hotels, as well as smaller accommodation units, have been approved over the past two years.
More recently, a total of ten luxury hotel project plans were approved for Mykonos and Santorini, five on each island.
On Mykonos, TAGOO BAY I.K.E. secured preliminary approval for a building permit concerning the development of a 5-star hotel; DONEGAN HOLDINGS was granted a building permit for the development of a 5-star hotel at the island’s Platys Gialos area, while Okeanida SA was given the green light by the General Directorate of Restoration, Museums and Technical Works for development of a 5-star hotel in the Paratiritirio area, beyond town plan limits. Also. Mr. Giorgos Asimomytis was granted a preliminary building permit for construction of a 4-star hotel at Platys Gialos, and KARAPETIS ENA IKE was granted permission to develop a 5-star hotel.
As for Santorini, FYTROS ANTONIS & CO was granted preliminary approval for a 5-star complex of furnished apartments in the Pyrgos area. SKYBAY secured preliminary approval to convert industrial facilities in the Exo Gialos area into a 5-star hotel. PELEKANOS MARKOS & CO was granted a building permit for a new 5-star hotel in Oia, while ALFA INVESTMENT hotel enterprises secured a permit for development of a hotel unit combining furnished apartments and rooms. In addition, the culture ministry’s division overseeing construction activity approved a project plan for a 4-star hotel off town plan limits, in Oia’s Baxedes area, owned by the single-member company Miltiadis Andronis and leased by Thiraiki Gi, also a single-member company.
Beside these upcoming projects, two major international hotel chains have also entered the Santorini market. Radisson Blu Zaffron Resort offers 103 rooms and suites. Sea Breeze Santorini Beach Resort, part of the Hilton’s Curio Collection, is scheduled to be launched in spring, 2022.
The ongoing tourism activity on both islands, at high levels well into autumn, highlights their success this season.
A total of 17,392 passengers have booked flights to Santorini airport from six European markets between October 18 to 28, according to figures provided by INSETE, the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation. More specifically, 4,990 passengers have booked from the UK, 4,326 from Italy, 3,243 from France, 2,252 from Germany, 1,544 from Switzerland, and 1,037 from Austria.
A total of 6,286 passengers have booked flights to Mykonos airport during the equivalent period. Of these, 1,584 have booked from the UK, 1,290 from Italy, 1,050 from Germany, 1,323 from France and 1,039 from Switzerland.
