Φύση που μοιάζει ανέγγιχτη, μεγάλες παραλίες και μικρότεροι βράχινοι κολπίσκοι, δάση πυκνά αλλά και βλάστηση χαμηλή, χωριά και οικισμοί κρυμμένοι από το πλούσιο ανάγλυφο, παραδόσεις με ιστορία αιώνων και όλα αυτά μαζί σε μια σύντομη εξερεύνηση στο «άλλο πρόσωπο» της Σάμου, στα δυτικά, εκεί που ο ήλιος βυθίζεται μέσα στα νερά του Αιγαίου.

Από τον Όρμο Μαραθόκαμπου στο νότο, μια ευθεία κάτω από το Καρλόβασι, ξεκινά μια ήπια διαδρομή προς τα δυτικά. Παραλίες αμμώδεις με φυσικές σκιές από αρμυρίκια και άλλα δέντρα της πλούσιας σαμιώτικης βλάστησης, εναλλάσσονται με μικρές τουριστικές επιχειρήσεις, εστιατόρια, beach bars αλλά και καταστήματα με είδη σπιτιού και οικιακής χρήσης.

Πολλοί επισκέπτες από χώρες ευρωπαϊκές έχουν αγοράσει ή ανακαινίσει οικίες στη Σάμο μετά την πρώτη τους επίσκεψη πολλά χρόνια πριν, με τον κεραυνοβόλο έρωτα με το νησί να έχει αλλάξει μεγάλο κομμάτι της ζωής τους. Η παραλία του Κάμπου θα δώσει με τη σειρά της τη σκυτάλη σε μια πιο δαιδαλώδη πορεία προς την Αγία Κυριακή, με φανταστική θέα προς τις παραλίες Βοτσαλάκια, Χαντάκι, της Ψιλής Άμμου και του Λιμνιώνα να φωτίζονται από την αντανάκλαση του ήλιου στα πεντακάθαρα νερά του Κόλπου Μαραθόκαμπου.

Στα δεξιά δεσπόζει το απότομο ύψος του όρους Κέρκης, καταπράσινο στα χαμηλότερα σημεία του και εντελώς πέτρινο, γκρίζο και γυμνό από βλάστηση κοντά στην κορυφή των 1434 μέτρων. Η διαδρομή γίνεται νοτιοδυτική, ακολουθώντας τη χάραξη του δρόμου την οποία επέτρεψε η άγρια φύση της Σάμου. Οι Φούρνοι και η Ικαρία σκιτσάρουν μέσα σε μια γαλάζια μονοχρωμία τον ορίζοντα με μια άγρια ομορφιά. Αρώματα από βοτάνια και ρίγανη η οποία έχει αρχίσει να στεγνώνει κάτω από τη θέρμη του ήλιου, μπαίνουν στο εσωτερικό του αυτοκινήτου, υπενθυμίζοντας με δήλωση καθαρή τη δύναμη του μοναδικού στον κόσμο μεσογειακού περιβάλλοντος.

Το καφεπαντοπωλείο «Ομόνια»/Photo: Νίκος Κόκκας

Η Καλλιθέα εμφανίζεται ξαφνικά μετά από μια απότομη στροφή, με το όνομά της να δικαιολογείται πλήρως και τώρα πια, λίγα χιλιόμετρα έχουν απομείνει μέχρι το τέλος του δρόμου, μέχρι τους Δρακαίους, όπου, εκτός από το δρόμο μοιάζει να σταματά και ο χρόνος. Από αυτό το σημείο ξεκινά μια πανέμορφη, μακρά πεζοπορική διαδρομή μέσα στο βουνό, διασχίζοντας την περιοχή Natura μέχρι τις ανέγγιχτες παραλίες Μεγάλο και Μικρό Σεϊτάνι, στον ομώνυμο όρμο, πλέον κοιτώντας βόρεια. «Ιώδιο και οξυγόνο μαζί», μου λέει με περηφάνια η Ελευθερία Αγγελίνα στο καφεπαντοπωλείο «Ομόνια» στους Δρακαίους, περιγράφοντας με τον πιο απλό τρόπο αυτό το πάντρεμα που συντελείται σε τόσο μικρή χιλιομετρική απόσταση.

Η Τέχνη της Ξυλοναυπηγικής στη Σάμο

Λίγα χιλιόμετρα χωρίζουν τους Δρακαίους από το φυσικό λιμανάκι του Άγιου Ισίδωρου. Ακόμη από ψηλά, πριν την κάθοδο προς τη μύτη της γης που εισβάλλει στη θάλασσα, όλες οι εικόνες παραπέμπουν σε μια από τις παλαιότερες τέχνες που αναπτύχθηκαν στη Σάμο, αυτή της ξυλοναυπηγικής. Μακρουλές φέτες από ξύλο πεύκου είναι τοποθετημένες σε ανοιχτούς χώρους κάτω από τον ήλιο. Σκαριά βρίσκονται διάσπαρτα σε διάφορα σημεία της ξηράς, άλλα σε καλή κατάσταση, άλλα έχοντας αποδεχτεί τη μοίρα του παροπλισμού τους. Κάποια κτίσματα στέκουν όρθια, χρήσιμα ακόμη ενώ άλλα φανερώνουν την πλούσια δραστηριότητα που συντελούνταν εδώ. Η ναυπηγική τέχνη άνθισε στη Σάμο ακόμη από την αρχαιότητα αλλά η νεότερη περίοδός της ξεκίνησε περίπου το 1720, όπου κάποιος Αλέξιος Ράπτης ναυπήγησε ένα σκαρί στον Μαραθόκαμπο, έχοντας φέρει τεχνίτες από την Πάτμο.

Πολλά ναυπηγεία δημιουργήθηκαν σε μικρούς ορμίσκους κοντά σε δασώδεις περιοχές για την εύκολη πρόσβαση στην ξυλεία. Ακριβώς ό,τι συμβαίνει στον Άγιο Ισίδωρο. Ο Ευάγγελος Μανωλιάδης με υποδέχεται στο χώρο εργασίας του, αφήνοντας για λίγο το τρεχαντήρι οκτώ μέτρων το οποίο βρίσκεται σε πλήρη εξέλιξη. Χωριό με ναυπηγούς, ο Άγιος Ισίδωρος ήταν ο σημαντικότερος ταρσανάς της Σάμου και σήμερα είναι ο μοναδικός του νησιού. Ο Ευάγγελος, στα 36 του χρόνια συνεχίζει την τέχνη με την οποία ασχολούνταν ο παππούς του, ο αδερφός του παππού του και ο πατέρας του ο Γιάννης. Έχοντας την έντονη μυρωδιά του ξύλου στη μύτη αλλά και του διαλύτη και των χρωμάτων, μου εξηγεί τη διαδικασία κατασκευής ενός μεσαίου σκάφους, από το κόψιμο, τη μεταφορά και το σχίσιμο του ξύλου, την ευλαβική συναρμολόγηση, την τοποθέτηση καμπίνας αλλά και του προτιμώμενου κινητήρα από τον πελάτη. Μια διαδικασία η οποία μπορεί να διαρκέσει έως και 4 μήνες.

Η ναυπηγική έχει συνδεθεί με τον τρόπο ζωής των τεχνιτών, την αίσθηση της συνέπειας, της ευθύνης, της καλλιτεχνίας αλλά και των θρύλων, των δεισιδαιμονιών καθώς και της κοινωνικότητας και της έννοιας της κοινότητας. Καθώς τον αφήνω να συνεχίσει την τριβή κάποιων ξύλων για να προχωρήσει η κατασκευή μέσα σε ένα σύννεφο από πριονίδι και σκόνη, περιφέρομαι και φωτογραφίζω τα κουφάρια των εγκαταλελειμμένων κτισμάτων και τις σκιές των παροπλισμένων εργαλείων κρατώντας όμως τα λόγια του ότι ο ίδιος δεν θεωρεί ότι συντηρεί μια παράδοση που πάει να εκλείψει και ότι τεχνίτες υπάρχουν ακόμη πολλοί. Όμορφη και αισιόδοξη σκέψη για μια τέχνη, κομμάτι της Άυλης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της Ελλάδας από το 2013.
